Tapestry Talk with Courtney English, Pediatric Occupational Therapist

Courtney, tell us about yourself, background, and family life!

I’m a pediatric occupational therapist and mom to a 3-year-old girl! I recently transitioned from clinical pediatric OT to an online career where I assist parents through courses, guides, and coaching. Exercise and family time are central to my life. My journey into healthcare began with a deep desire to help people, inspired by my cousin’s recovery from a spinal cord injury with the help of physical and occupational therapy. Working with children, especially those who are neurodivergent, sparked my passion for understanding and promoting sensory health and regulation.

Tell us about your profession and being a Pediatric Occupational Therapist.

Pediatric occupational therapy focuses on how sensory regulation impacts a child’s emotional and motor skills, among others. Drawing from my clinical experience and personal journey as a mother, I’ve developed programs to support parents in implementing sensory routines. My goal is to normalize sensory health for both neurodivergent and neurotypical children, advocating for the strengths found in neurodiversity.

How does occupational therapy play into the emotional health of a child?

Occupational therapists approach emotional health holistically, helping children connect their bodily sensations to their emotions. This understanding empowers children to manage their feelings effectively, promoting overall well-being.

What led you to become an occupational therapist and how has being a creator in that field allowed you to help more parents and children?

Initially drawn to outpatient orthopedics, I shifted to pediatrics after becoming a mother and experiencing postpartum anxiety. This personal challenge fueled my desire to support child development and anxious parents. Transitioning to an online platform has expanded my reach, enabling me to empower more families with practical strategies.

As a parent, can you share any techniques or strategies that help you stay mentally balanced?

Learning to say no and finding balance are ongoing challenges for me. Physical exercise and collaboration with my husband are crucial for maintaining mental balance. My support network, including my mother who helps care for my daughter, allows me the time I need for self-care and work. Deep breathing and staying hydrated are daily practices that help me manage stress.

What aspects of The Mindset Tapestry do you find most beneficial for your clients and children in general?

The Mindset Tapestry encourages children to explore positive affirmations, facilitating emotional reflection and communication with parents. The detailed guidance provided by the cards supports meaningful interactions and emotional development.

How does OT help with emotional regulation?

Occupational therapists teach children strategies to understand and respond to their emotions, integrating mind-body connections. This approach supports emotional processing and regulation, empowering children to navigate their feelings effectively.
